Password Security Guide for Seniors
Protect your accounts by creating, storing, and managing strong passwords with confidence.
1. Creating Strong Passwords
- Use at least 12 characters with a mix of uppercase, lowercase, numbers, and symbols.
- Avoid obvious words, birthdays, or common patterns like "password123".
- Consider passphrases—random word combinations like "CoffeeTable!Sunshine42?".
2. Using Password Managers
- Choose a reputable manager (e.g., Bitwarden, LastPass, or KeePass).
- Password managers generate, store, and autofill complex passwords securely.
- Secure your vault with a strong master password and enable two-factor authentication.
3. Enabling Two-Factor Authentication (2FA)
- Enable 2FA on accounts whenever offered for extra protection.
- Use authentication apps (Google Authenticator, Authy) instead of SMS when possible.
- Find service-specific instructions at twofactorauth.org.
4. Updating & Recovering Passwords
- Update passwords every 6–12 months or immediately after a breach.
- Keep recovery options (backup email, phone) current and secure.
- Check for compromised accounts at Have I Been Pwned.
